Mothering is an art!

YO MAMA’S HOUSE, INC. offers MOTHERS the opportunity to make art by providing the time, space, and materials. Mothers receive encouragement and support to express themselves utilizing any art genre and materials. Local women artists come teach specific technical skills. Mothers teach other mothers traditional “woman’s work”skills such as sewing, cooking, gardening, healing practices, childcare, and more.

Mothering is an art!

In these multi-generational, multi-racial gatherings, mothers revisit, discover and share their familial mother wit, cultural traditions and legacies. In our discussions Mothers share HERstories of activism by our mothers, friends, family, and Ancestors.

As a working single parent, I appreciated the space and time to be in community with other mothers, mothers who spanned the generations - all wise in their own ways, increasingly vulnerable with one another. We sat around the dining table in conversations and stories that centered mothering within the context of current events, traditions we had inherited, dreams we had never spoken out loud. As we spoke and listened, we made art: jewelry, mosaics, sketches, fiber art... Those afternoons, for me, were magical.

Mothering can be an isolating experience. I have often felt overwhelmed and full of self-doubt as a parent. Being in community with other mothers is the antidote to that isolation. We need more of these spaces and places in our community.

Art of Mothering Residencies

YO MAMA’S HOUSE, INC. will work with organizations that wish to add art making and maternal wisdom harvesting to their programs, events and services to women. These art making sessions compliment social and mental health services, provide opportunities for self expression, leisure and gathering with other women for fun and great conversations. Women learn traditional woman’s work skills: sewing, cooking, child-minding, and art production skills for self and others.
